Perception plays a big part in customer acquisition

Updated: Oct 15, 2020

There's a general tendency for consumers to expect larger brands to provide the 'best quality' or the most 'value for money' but this is not always the case.

So why so many consumers tend to make this assumption is due to the fact that a company is well known so they expect better quality product or service and automatic value for money and can perceive smaller businesses as less valuable in terms of quality and value for money.

We believe at Girlfridayz is all due to perception what one sees and automatically think and judge by the look of something, It may be that the office looks a bit shabby or run down or the owner is not dress in smart attire and in some people mind it a straight turn off, as they will automatically perceive you as oh! if their office looks like that and they dress like that the service or product they provide must be of the cheap kind and therefore of lesser quality.

Without knowing they already have formed a judgment of some sort and will not use you for this reason, however wrong or right it is that is mostly the case in business. In the same breath under the umbrella of perception and assumption, if you have a nice swanky modern office, people dress to their best attire the same judgment is formed but in this case, they will be more drawn to you and your business automatically assuming that if all look good they must provide an excellent product of quality and excellent services plus value for money.

This shallow thinking can be detrimental for any business because perception and assumption are sometimes what consumers base their choices on the visual cue they received and their mind gravitate toward it must be good or bad.

The definition of Perception

the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses and the way in which something is regarded, understood or interpreted.

The definition of Assumption

A thing that is accepted as true or as certain to happen, without proof.

The foundation of what we think, what we say, and what we do influences the way we are perceived. Also, it goes beyond this line and the perception pyramid what we write our reflective thought on paper or email, article, even in pictures, perception plays a big part to influence our choices, views, and judgment of one another.

An example of this my view and perception of Dr. Travis Bradberry is an influencer on LinkedIn and author of Emotional Intelligence 2.0 & President at TalentSmart Is the perfect example of people perception and assumption due to his book and the fact that he is an influencer plus all his credential they all assume that he is "so good" as he writes a series of good articles relate it to emotional intelligence and in my view, they all suffer from nepotism when he comes to the Dr.

I do not rate him and I do not care about his credential or status I see him for what he is even if on occasion I think his article can be excellent or good, he has written a couple of articles advocating self-censorship in the workplace in order to be like by co-worker or superior essentially be someone that you not refraining to say what you thing by demonstrating in a series of an example of phrases one might say taken out of context how one might look bad and they should catch themselves and refrain to say such phrases before they are cast out so to speak. If interesting to know what article I wrote in disagreement it is called Do You Thing Self-Censorship make you smart or a fraud

Barely anyone saw what he was advocating but I did and wrote a big great article on how I strongly disagree highlighted in bold in the latter paragraph, been a level headed person I thought it was a one-off but no it is not he is advocating exactly that as he wrote other similar articles bearing other title and the irony of it all his last article about catching a liar make me laugh as it is in total contraction with what he is advocating in one hand he tells you to be fake in some situation and in the other tell you how to catch a liar and give you pointer on how to proceed.

Consistency and authenticity is key in business

So my point is in business it is important to be consistent and authentic in what your message is and what you want to convey to your customers or potential customers, the quality of your good or services to have a strong ethos which represents your core value and a mission statement which represent these values, also in your verbal, written, body language communication ensure that you are mindful of your reader, listener and you are polite, friendly, professional, useful and informative hence providing value to people and learn to be the last one to speak so you ensure that the person feels they have been heard seek to understand and then be understood.

Listening and seeking to understand is a skill

How you dress or how your office lookalike it not what matter most in consumers eyes it the quality of your products and services, your friendly customer's service, been in a position of help and support and meet your customers need to their satisfaction, asking feedback on service provision and conduct survey on how you can improve is always a good pointer and listening to your customers is the best business advice ever as they are the one who helps shape your business and help you improve.

The size of your business, the number of employees, and the money you got do not equate to anything if your customers feel devalued and not listen too (we have seen an example of it this year — Greenfield tower residents, if they had been listened to, a tragedy, would have been prevented).

One thing to remember when you run a business customer is at the heart and soul of your business if they feel valued they will support you and even stay with you and turn into valued customer and a great advocate for your business, however, if they feel devalued they would leave you and go somewhere else where they feel valued usually your competitor. Customers put you in business and take you out of business too.
